Entity SEO
Entity SEO: recognised as an entity and cited.
Modern search engines and AI systems do not think in keywords but in entities: in clearly defined things such as brands, people, products, places and topics, and in the relationships between them. Entity SEO makes sure your brand is recognised as a distinct entity, classified correctly and connected to the right topics. That is precisely what it takes to be cited in AI answers and treated as an authority in search.
Distinct, not similar
Entity SEO cleanly separates your brand from namesakes and other meanings of the word.
Machine-readable
Entity SEO works with structured data, sameAs and knowledge graph signals instead of plain prose.
Across every source
Entity SEO keeps the same details on your website, in directories and in open data sources.
Fundamentals
What is entity SEO?
Entity SEO is a central building block of GEO as a discipline in its own right, meaning GEO optimization, and it works into classic search at the same time. It answers the question that comes before visibility and tone: does the system even know who you are?
Entity SEO means optimising so that search engines and AI systems understand a brand, company or topic as a distinct entity. An entity is a clearly delimited thing with defined properties and relationships, not merely a string of characters. Google and large language models use that understanding to classify content, assess authority and connect brands to the right topics. A brand made clearly recognisable through entity SEO is considered more consistently and more often in answers. Conversely, the effect of mentions is diluted whenever a system is unsure whether two references mean the same brand.
In practice entity SEO means your brand needs unambiguous, contradiction-free details across your own website and external sources, from structured data through directory entries to open knowledge bases. On top of that comes topical connection, meaning a clear link between the entity and the topics it should stand for.
Semtrix works on exactly these entity SEO signals and makes their effect measurable through its own GEO and LLM tracking tool. Start with a free analysis and find out how clearly your brand is recognised as an entity today.
Entity SEO makes search engines and AI systems recognise a brand as a distinct entity rather than a string of characters. It covers structured data, consistent details across every source and a clear connection to the right topics.

GEO and SEO
GEO and SEO: two disciplines that complement each other.
Entity SEO works into both disciplines: it strengthens AI visibility and at the same time helps classic search engine optimization, because Google also classifies content through entities. Both disciplines remain independent, yet both benefit from clear entities.
That is what makes this page different: of all the GEO building blocks, entity SEO has the strongest feedback into classic search. A maintained knowledge panel, clean organisation markup and contradiction-free details feed rankings and AI answers at the same time. The technical implementation of the markup belongs to technical SEO; the decision about which entities are modelled in the first place belongs to entity SEO.
Effect in classic search
Effect in AI answers

The most common finding is banal and expensive at once: three spellings of the company name, two addresses from different years, a registration number that appears nowhere. No model can build a reliable attribution from that. It is a few days of work and it affects everything else.
Why Semtrix
Why entity SEO from Semtrix?
Semtrix built GEO expertise early and combines it with more than 1,500 projects delivered since 2015. Entity work sits exactly at the interface where many providers come apart: it needs technical understanding of markup and rendering and, at the same time, strategic decisions about what a brand should stand for. Both come from the same team here.
As part of the Eskimoz group, named Best Large Integrated Search Agency at the European Search Awards 2026, Semtrix brings experience many are only now developing. The jury explicitly cited the group's early GEO focus. You can read more about the team about us, and see examples of our work in the references. Strategy and ownership sit with the GEO agency.
Who it is for
Who is entity SEO right for?
Entity SEO pays off for brands that want to be seen as an authority in their field, for companies with products that need explaining and for anyone who wants to be cited in AI answers. It is particularly worthwhile when a brand has so far been classified unclearly or barely appears in AI systems.
Brands with an ambiguous name
When the brand name is also an ordinary word or another company's name, entity SEO decides who is meant.
Companies after a rename or merger
Old and new company names live on in sources side by side for years. Without a clear link, the brand splits into two entities as far as systems are concerned.
Brands with several locations or legal entities
Entity SEO gives each location its own entity, all connected to the parent brand. Without that hierarchy the entries compete with each other instead of supporting each other.
Explanation-heavy products and specialist topics
Where a category has no settled name yet, topical connection decides whether the brand is assigned to a search topic at all.
Where the lines are drawn
Entity SEO, mentions and measurement: who does what.
Entity SEO settles identity. It makes sure a system knows who you are, what you stand for and that two references mean the same brand. Building brand mentions then makes sure that entity is actually discussed. AI mentions tracking measures whether that lands in AI answers. Without a clear entity, mention work evaporates because the signal is split across several supposed brands. That is why this page comes first in the sequence, not last.
Building blocks
What entity SEO covers.
Entity SEO is part of the wider GEO optimization, while strategy and ownership sit with the GEO agency. It also supports LLMO and visibility in SGE and AI Overviews.
Entity analysis
A review of how clearly your brand is recognised as an entity today and which topics it is assigned to, including a comparison with namesakes and competitors.
Structured data
Technical markup that makes entities and relationships machine-readable, with its own schema per page type and ongoing validation.
Knowledge graph and sameAs
Connecting the brand to open data sources such as Wikidata and verifying it through sameAs declarations, so profiles and entries point to one entity.
Consistent signals
Uniform information across your website and external sources, from company name through address and founding year to the description of your services.
Topical connection
Linking the brand to relevant topics and terms for clear topical authority, aligned with internal linking and onpage optimization.
Content preparation
Content that describes and evidences entities unambiguously, with definition paragraphs, named responsibility and verifiable details.

Distinct. Consistent. Connected.
Entity SEO delivers a brand systems can attribute with confidence before they start talking about it.

Process
How we work together.
Entity SEO in four steps, from analysis to ongoing control. Most of the work is unspectacular, and that is exactly why it works.
Diagnosis
Entity analysis and a review of topical assignment, including a check of every external entry for contradictions.
Decision
A strategy for establishing and connecting the entity, setting the canonical details and the topics the brand should stand for.
Delivery
Structured data, consistent signals and content work, including correction of contradictory entries in external sources.
Monitoring
Checking recognition and AI visibility through the GEO and LLM tracking tool, so new contradictions are noticed before they spread.
Signals
What an entity is built from.
Four signal sources determine how clearly a brand is recognised, and all four belong to entity SEO. None of them is enough on its own, and the weakest often decides the outcome.
Structured data on your own website
In entity SEO, schema.org markup is the most direct statement about your own identity. It does not replace external confirmation, but it supplies the basis:
- Organization or LocalBusiness as the central markup for the brand
- sameAs declarations pointing to profiles and entries of the same entity
- Person markup for named specialist authors and management
- Product, Service and FAQPage by page type, consistently validated
No. It is a self-declaration. Systems compare it with external sources. If the markup claims something that appears nowhere else, it is weighted lower.
Who implements the markup?Usually we do, together with your developers or directly in the system where that is possible. The technical side is covered under technical SEO.
Knowledge graph, Wikidata and directories
Open and structured third-party sources are, for a system, the confirmation of what the website claims. They therefore weigh heavily:
- A Wikidata entry with evidenced details, where the notability criteria are met
- Knowledge panel: maintaining and correcting the details shown
- Industry and business directories with identical master data
- Profiles on networks and portals, connected through sameAs
No, and it cannot be forced. Wikidata has its own notability criteria and requires evidence. Where an entry is possible and factually supported it helps. Where it is not, directories and consistent profiles carry the load.
Can I edit my knowledge panel? After verification you can suggest corrections. What is displayed remains Google's decision, based on the sources on the web. That is why corrections always start with the sources.
Consistency across every source
The dullest and most effective part of entity SEO: the same details everywhere, without exception. Contradictions cost more than missing entries:
- One canonical company name, including legal form and spelling
- Identical address and contact details across every entry
- A uniform short description of services and category
- A review after every change, because old entries otherwise live on
More than expected. Two addresses or three spellings cause signals to be split across several supposed entities. The effort for mentions then rises without the effect rising with it.
What happens after a move or a rename?Every entry is updated and the old name is visibly connected to the new one rather than quietly replaced. Otherwise two entities continue to exist in parallel.
Topical connection
In entity SEO, being recognised is not enough; the entity also has to be connected to the right topics. That comes from content and linking:
- Topic clusters instead of single pages, with a clear hierarchy
- Internal linking with descriptive anchor texts to your core topics
- Mentions in the right topical environment, built through brand mentions
- Named specialist authors who are recognisable as entities themselves
Because expertise attaches to people. A named person with a consistent profile across several sources strengthens the credibility of the content and with it the likelihood of citation.
How many topics can a brand claim? As many as it can evidence. Appearing too broadly dilutes the assignment. In practice a few clearly claimed topics are worth more than a long list.

Semtrix by Eskimoz
What the Eskimoz group means for your entity.
Semtrix is a global search agency: you are found where people search, in classic search and in AI answers alike. Since 2024 Semtrix has been part of the European Eskimoz group. Nothing changes about your support; your project stays with a fixed team in Düsseldorf or Essen.
For entity SEO across borders that is decisive: a brand with several national subsidiaries needs a hierarchy that is built the same way in every market. The group works across 5 countries and 10 languages. At the European Search Awards 2026 it was named Best Large Integrated Search Agency, and the jury explicitly cited its early GEO focus.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about entity SEO.
The questions we are asked most often about entity SEO in a first conversation.
What is an entity in an SEO context?
An entity is a uniquely identifiable thing, for example a brand, a person or a product, with defined properties and relationships. Search engines and AI systems use entities to classify content.
How does entity SEO help AI visibility?
AI systems prefer to cite sources they can classify clearly, and that is exactly what entity SEO delivers. An unambiguously recognised entity with consistent signals is more likely to be used as a reliable source.
Do I need structured data for this?
Structured data is an important building block of entity SEO, because it makes entities and relationships machine-readable. Editorial and topical consistency is just as decisive.
How does entity SEO differ from brand mentions?
Entity SEO settles who you are. Brand mentions make sure you are discussed. Without a clear entity, mentions are split across several supposed brands and lose their effect.
And how does it relate to AI mentions tracking?
AI mentions tracking measures whether your brand appears in AI answers. Entity SEO is one of the causes that move that number, not the measurement itself.
What is a knowledge panel and do I need one?
The knowledge panel is the information box Google shows for a recognised entity. It is a good sign of clean entity signals, but not a goal in itself, and it cannot be forced.
What does sameAs mean?
sameAs is a declaration in structured data that points to other profiles of the same entity, for instance on Wikidata or in business directories. It helps systems attribute scattered entries to one brand.
How long does it take for an entity to be recognised?
In entity SEO, technical markup takes effect within weeks, while confirmation through external sources takes longer. Realistically it takes several months for a clean attribution to establish itself in search and AI answers.
What if my brand name already exists elsewhere?
Then context decides. Entity SEO uses consistent details, topical connection and sameAs references to make clear which entity is meant. A name clash is rarely resolved completely, but almost always improved considerably.
Is entity SEO the same as structured data?
No. Structured data is a tool, entity SEO is the discipline. The discipline also covers external data sources, consistency and the decision about which topics the brand should stand for.
Does entity SEO help classic search as well?
Yes, and more strongly than most other GEO building blocks. Google also classifies content through entities, so the work feeds rankings and AI answers at the same time.
What does entity SEO cost?
The entity SEO effort depends on how many locations, brands and external entries need putting in order. After the free analysis you receive a prioritised roadmap with transparent effort rather than a flat rate.
