SEO relaunch
SEO relaunch without losing rankings.
A website relaunch is an opportunity and a risk at the same time. Without careful SEO support, rankings built over years disappear quickly: URLs change, redirects are missing, content vanishes. Semtrix supports your relaunch so existing visibility is kept and the new website realises its potential.
Baseline before rebuild
Every SEO relaunch starts by recording what carries the site today.
A mapping, not a collection
In an SEO relaunch every old URL gets a target, including the ones nobody thinks about.
Support past the launch
The critical weeks of an SEO relaunch come after go-live, not before.
Fundamentals
What is an SEO relaunch?
The SEO relaunch is part of the wider SEO optimization and the discipline that turns a risky deadline into a plannable project.
An SEO relaunch is the SEO side of a website relaunch or migration, from a redesign through a CMS change to a move onto a new domain or URL structure. The aim is to keep existing visibility and avoid the familiar risks: lost URLs, missing redirects, indexing problems or redirect loops. A well-planned relaunch also uses the restart to improve structure, technology and content. What sets it apart from an ordinary project is the deadline: every change takes effect at once, while the search engine notices them spread over weeks. Preparation decides the outcome, not reaction.
Semtrix takes the relaunch personally: a named contact, clear processes and cover in every phase. As part of the Eskimoz group, Semtrix brings relaunch experience from more than 1,500 delivered projects. Start with a free analysis and secure your relaunch.
Semtrix supports the relaunch from planning through go-live to the checks afterwards, with a clear before and after comparison and a clean redirect concept. The baseline comes from a full crawl with CrawlR, extended by the actual entry pages from your Search Console. What does not appear there does not appear in the mapping either.
An SEO relaunch protects a website's visibility during a redesign, CMS change or domain move. At its core sits a complete URL mapping with 301 redirects, plus checks on indexing and rankings after go-live.

Relaunch and GEO
GEO: AI visibility as a discipline of its own.
Visibility in AI systems can suffer during a relaunch too, whenever content and structures are lost. GEO, the separate discipline of AI visibility, therefore belongs in the relaunch plan.
The mechanism differs from classic search: AI systems work from training and citation states that refresh more slowly than an index. A passage cited today can point nowhere after the move, and the correction takes longer than re-indexing. That is why cited pages are recorded in the SEO relaunch beforehand and their content deliberately preserved. Measurement runs through the LLM Ranking module, more on the channel work with the GEO agency and GEO optimization.
Classic search in an SEO relaunch
AI visibility in an SEO relaunch

Most relaunches do not go wrong at go-live. They go wrong six weeks earlier, when somebody decides the old guide articles have no place in the new design. Rankings hang on content, not on templates.
Why Semtrix
Why have your SEO relaunch supported by Semtrix?
Semtrix brings 11 years of experience and more than 1,500 delivered projects, among them numerous relaunches and migrations. How far a supported rebuild can go is visible at ricardo-grund.de: visibility up by 2,700 %, 100 % of keywords in the top 3, achieved through a new web design and targeted SEO. A redesign need not be a step backwards when structure and content survive the change.
As part of the Eskimoz group, named Best Large Integrated Search Agency at the European Search Awards 2026, Semtrix knows the familiar traps and covers them systematically. You can see who is behind it about us, delivered projects are in our references. If you want the partnership to continue beyond the relaunch, that offer sits with the SEO agency.
Who it is for
Who needs SEO relaunch support?
Redesign without a structural change
In the SEO relaunch of a pure redesign the risk sits in vanished passages and altered heading logic. The URLs stay, the substance often does not.
CMS or shop system change
An SEO relaunch across systems produces new URL patterns, parameters and pagination. What matters is whether the old pattern is fully mapped before the old server goes dark.
Domain move and rebrand
The trickiest SEO relaunch, because authority has to move as well. Alongside redirects it involves the change of address in Search Console and the handling of existing backlinks.
Websites with existing visibility
The more organic traffic arrives today, the higher the stake in an SEO relaunch. Repair after the fact regularly costs more than prevention.
Our approach
No go-live without a sign-off list.
An SEO relaunch has a date, and dates create pressure. So Semtrix works with a sign-off list that is ticked off point by point before switching over. Open points are not dropped, they are decided deliberately, with a name and a date. That costs an hour before launch and often saves a quarter afterwards.
Building blocks
Services in an SEO relaunch.
Six building blocks of the SEO relaunch that build on each other. The first is the one projects skip most often.
Baseline
Recording all URLs, rankings and content before the SEO relaunch through the SEO analysis, including the pages only reachable through external links.
Redirect concept
The heart of the SEO relaunch: clean 301 redirects without chains or loops, each URL to its nearest match rather than to the homepage.
Structure and technology
Improving architecture and technical foundations through technical SEO, so the rebuild also becomes an improvement.
Content migration
Securing and improving important content, extended by the content audit. Whatever carries rankings is flagged before anything is cut.
Go-live support and monitoring
Checking indexing, redirects and rankings after launch, with a daily look during the first weeks.
Before and after comparison
Visibility, entry pages and conversions set side by side before and after the move, so any deviation can be traced.

Process
How does working together look?
Four phases in which the SEO relaunch runs alongside from planning into the weeks after launch.
Diagnosis
Recording all URLs, rankings and content, flagging the pages that actually carry the organic traffic.
Decision
Redirect and structure concept for the SEO relaunch, agreed with development and editorial before anything is built.
Delivery
Support through migration, redirects and content, including testing on the staging environment rather than in production.
Go-live and monitoring
Checks after launch and fast correction of errors, with fixed checkpoints after 24 hours, one week and four weeks.
Relaunch types
SEO relaunch by type of project.
Not every SEO relaunch carries the same risk. What gets secured first depends on what actually changes.
Redesign with the same URL structure
The apparently harmless case. Because the addresses stay, an SEO relaunch is often never commissioned at all. The losses then happen in the detail.
- Record text volume and definition paragraphs per page type before the rebuild
- Check the heading hierarchy in the new template, not only how it looks
- Verify internal links from body text and the footer area
- Serve content that now sits behind tabs from the server
Because the new template cuts content, changes heading levels or loads text through JavaScript. For a search engine that is a different page, even at an identical address.
Is comparing screenshots enough? No. The comparison uses the delivered source code, not the view in the browser. That is exactly where missing paragraphs and late-loading content show up.
Changing the content management system
In the SEO relaunch of a system change, URL patterns, image paths and often the page types all shift. The effort sits in the mapping, not in moving the text.
- Complete URL mapping old to new, including attachments and images
- Deliberately control pagination, filters and parameters in the new system
- Rebuild structured data in the new template
- Settle editing rights and maintenance routines before launch
Yes, where they are linked externally or bring traffic. Images carry rankings in image search, and PDF files often collect backlinks over years.
Can the old site keep running in parallel?Only without indexing and without public access. Two reachable versions of the same content create duplicates and split the signals across both.
Moving to a new domain
In a domain move it is not only content that relocates but also the authority built over years. That takes time and a calm sequence.
- Submit and document the change of address in Search Console
- Keep 301 redirects permanently, not just for a quarter
- Point the most important referring domains at the new address
- Update brand and entity signals such as imprint, profiles and listings
Usually a few weeks to a few months, depending on size and crawl frequency. A temporary dip is normal, a sustained drop after eight weeks is not.
Should a domain move and a redesign happen together?Better not. If both happen at once, a drop cannot be traced to a cause. Where the schedule allows nothing else, the before state is documented with particular care.
New URL structure on the same domain
This SEO relaunch is usually triggered by a new navigation or by flattening deep directories. The change is smaller than a domain move but often touches every page at once.
- Align the target structure with search intent and topic clusters, not with the menu
- Reduce click depth for the important pages while you are at it
- Resolve redirect chains left over from earlier rebuilds
- Rewrite internal links to the new addresses instead of routing them through redirects
In practice the loss is small, as long as the redirect points directly at a topically matching target. It gets expensive with chains across several hops and with catch-all targets.
Should old URLs point to the homepage?Only where no suitable target exists. Blanket redirects to the homepage are frequently treated like a 404 and pass on almost no signals.
Migrating an online shop
The SEO relaunch of a shop brings large volumes of URLs, plus variants, filters and discontinued products. Method decides the outcome here, because manual matching does not scale.
- Map categories and product detail pages separately
- Route discontinued products to the matching category instead of deleting them
- Control filter and sorting parameters in the new system from day one
- Check the product feed and availability data alongside the relaunch
They are redirected to the closest product or the parent category. A 404 is only right where there is neither a replacement nor a suitable category.
How long should a shop be watched after the relaunch? At least one full seasonal cycle of the main categories. Otherwise seasonal products only rank again once demand is already running, and a loss surfaces six months too late.
New language and country sets
Adding a language or a country effectively creates a second SEO relaunch inside the same domain. The mistakes almost always sit in the markup, not in the translation.
- Justify the choice between directory, subdomain and separate domain
- Mark up hreflang completely and reciprocally, including x-default
- Research localised keywords instead of translating terms
- Measure by country separately to spot shifts early
Rarely. Search terms, category names and expected depth differ by market. A literal translation often ranks past the actual demand.
Do country sets compete with each other?Without clean hreflang, yes. Two language versions then rank against each other in the same market and neither reaches its potential.

Guide
The relaunch schedule at a glance.
The SEO relaunch in four phases with fixed tasks. Work through them in this order and there is nothing to improvise the day after go-live.
Document the baseline
All URLs, rankings, entry pages and backlinks are recorded and frozen. The result is a reference state against which every later deviation is measured.
Set the target structure
Navigation, page types and topic clusters are decided before templates are built. The result is a structure that reflects search intent and the business.
Name the risks
Pages with high traffic, strong backlinks or AI citations are flagged and handled with care. The result is a short list of pages that are not up for negotiation.
Build the mapping
Every old URL gets a target, justified and documented. The result is a table without empty rows, including the cases deliberately set to 410.
Check the staging site
The new website is crawled on the test environment: status codes, canonicals, metadata, structured data and text volume per page type. The result is an error list before the deadline.
Prepare tracking
Analytics, consent, conversion events and Search Console are prepared for the new structure. The result is continuity of data across the switch.
Switch over and check immediately
Right after the switch, samples from the mapping are tested, robots.txt and canonicals verified and the sitemap submitted. The result is confirmation that the basics hold.
Trigger indexing
Submit the new sitemap, send key pages for inspection and watch coverage. The result is quick capture of the new structure.
Catch errors
404 reports, server errors and redirect chains are reviewed daily in the first days and corrected at once. The result is short outages instead of lasting gaps.
Re-check rankings
After one week and after four weeks the ranking state is held against the frozen reference. The result is a list of pages that have not recovered.
Attribute the losses
For every page that has not recovered, the cause is determined: missing redirect, cut content, changed search intent or an external reason. The result is targeted correction rather than general rework.
Take the upside
Once things are stable, the restart is put to use: better internal linking, expanded content, clean markup. The result is visibility above the old level.
Team
Here for you in person.
An SEO relaunch needs people who understand your developers and still insist on the rankings.

Semtrix by Eskimoz
What the Eskimoz group means for your SEO relaunch.
Semtrix is a global search agency: you get found where people search, in classic search as much as in AI answers. Semtrix has been part of the European Eskimoz group since 2024. Nothing changes about how you are looked after, your project stays with a fixed team in Düsseldorf or Essen.
In an SEO relaunch what counts most is having the before state complete. CrawlR captures domains with six-figure page counts in a single pass, Monitoring holds positions and AI Overview mentions across the switch. Added to that is migration experience in ten languages and five countries. At the European Search Awards 2026 the group was named Best Large Integrated Search Agency.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about SEO relaunch.
The questions about an SEO relaunch we are asked most often in a first conversation.
Why do websites lose rankings in a relaunch?
Usually because of missing or faulty redirects, changed URLs without a forward, lost content or indexing problems. A clean concept prevents it.
When should SEO be involved in a relaunch?
As early as possible, ideally already in the planning phase. Bring SEO in only after go-live and the losses have usually happened.
Can a relaunch also improve visibility?
Yes. Supported properly, the restart can be used to improve structure, technology and content and lift visibility above the previous level.
How much of a drop should I expect?
In a well-prepared SEO relaunch a short fluctuation is normal, a marked drop is not. A sustained decline after four to eight weeks is a finding, not fate, and can usually be traced to a specific cause.
How long does the support last?
An SEO relaunch takes two to four months from first planning to the last checkpoint. The effort sits before the deadline, the observation afterwards is comparatively light.
What is a URL mapping?
The central table in an SEO relaunch, assigning a new address to every old one. It is the basis of the redirects and the only evidence that no page was forgotten.
How long do redirects need to stay in place?
Permanently. They cost nothing and keep passing on signals from old backlinks. Switching them off after a year is one of the most common avoidable mistakes.
Does all old content have to be carried over?
No, but the decision needs a reason. Pages without traffic, without backlinks and without a strategic role can go. Everything else is carried over or deliberately consolidated.
Who implements the redirects technically?
In an SEO relaunch usually your developers or agency, working from the mapping. Semtrix supplies the specifications, checks the implementation and handles the build where the system allows it.
What about backlinks to deleted pages?
They are routed to the nearest suitable target. Before that we check which referring domains actually carry authority, so the effort lands where it counts.
Does a small relaunch need the same procedure?
In principle yes, the SEO relaunch simply runs at a smaller scale. Baseline, mapping and follow-up checks stay, the effort scales with the number of URLs.
Can I postpone the relaunch if something is open?
Usually yes, and often it is the cheaper decision. Which points justify a delay is on the sign-off list. Everything else is documented and picked up after launch.
