Local SEO

Local SEO for more customers from your region.

Being found locally takes more than a good website. It is about visibility exactly where people nearby search for products and services. Local SEO makes sure your business appears for regional queries, in Google Maps and in the local pack.

Fundamentals

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is part of the wider SEO optimization and rests on the same foundations, but it works on different surfaces: map listings, reviews and profiles often decide the outcome before anyone reaches the website.

Local SEO covers every measure that increases a company's visibility for location-based queries. That includes optimising the Google Business Profile, keeping company data consistent across name, address and phone number, building local landing pages, managing reviews, earning regional backlinks and maintaining the technical basis of the website. The goal is to appear prominently for queries with a local context, whether the location is typed out or simply inferred from where the searcher is. The decisive difference from general search optimisation is distance: in local search, Google weighs not only relevance and authority but also how far the searcher is from the provider.

Semtrix takes local SEO personally: a named contact, transparent communication and a strategy that fits your location and your goals. As part of the Eskimoz group, Semtrix combines local market knowledge with international experience. Start with a free analysis and find out how visible you are locally today.

To do that, Semtrix reviews your local starting position, meaning your profile, directory entries, reviews, local rankings and the competition in your catchment area, and builds a strategy that grows regional visibility deliberately.

In short

Local SEO makes a business visible for location-based queries, in Google Maps, in the local pack and in organic results. Alongside relevance and authority, distance to the searcher counts here as well.

Local SEO and GEO

GEO: AI visibility as a discipline of its own.

Local searches increasingly run through AI systems that recommend providers nearby. GEO, the separate discipline of AI visibility, therefore matters to local businesses too.

The difference is tangible. The local pack shows three listings; an AI answer often names only one or two, but with reasoning attached. Who gets named depends on profile data, reviews and whether verifiable information about the business exists online at all. What that takes in practice is covered by the GEO agency and GEO optimization.

In local projects the biggest lever is almost never the website. It is the profile, the reviews and the question of whether the same phone number appears everywhere. It sounds unspectacular and it still decides half the calls.

Who it is for

Who is local SEO right for?

Trades and local service providers

When work comes from the surrounding area, visibility in the local pack decides your enquiry flow. Local SEO covers the service and the catchment area together.

Practices and law firms

Here reviews and accessibility carry particular weight. Local SEO keeps profile data complete, opening hours current and builds a page per specialism.

Hospitality and retail

Opening hours, photos and current offers often decide matters before anyone visits the website. Local SEO keeps those details consistent and up to date.

Chains and multi-location businesses

Several locations need their own pages and their own profiles, or they compete with each other. Local SEO organises structure, linking and data upkeep across every branch.

1 record
Name, address and phone number are defined once and published identically across every directory, profile and page of the website, including spelling, legal form and additions.

Our approach

One record, identical everywhere.

Most local projects do not fail on missing measures but on contradictory details. An old phone number in one directory, a different spelling of the street, two profiles for the same branch. That is why local SEO at Semtrix starts with a single maintained record that every entry is checked against.

Building blocks

What local SEO covers.

These six building blocks make up local SEO. The diagnosis decides which one comes first.

01

Google Business Profile

Setup and optimisation for better Maps and local visibility, including categories, services, photos and posts.

02

Local landing pages

Location pages that cover regional queries, with content of their own rather than a swapped place name.

03

NAP consistency and directories

Consistent company data across every relevant directory, with duplicates and legacy entries cleared up.

04

Review management

Building and maintaining reviews as a trust signal, including a process for responses and difficult cases.

05

Local authority

Regional backlinks and mentions through offpage optimization, from associations, clubs and local media.

06

Technical basis

A clean foundation through technical SEO, including LocalBusiness markup and mobile load times.

Process

How does working together look?

Four steps that take local SEO from a stocktake to measurable visibility in your area.

01

Diagnosis

Analysis of local visibility, the Google Business Profile and the competition nearby, including all existing directory entries.

02

Decision

A strategy with clear local priorities, a defined catchment area and an order of play across locations.

03

Delivery

Optimisation of profile, landing pages, directory entries and local authority, with contradictory data cleared up.

04

Monitoring

Tracking of local rankings, Maps visibility and enquiries. Local SEO is measured in calls and route requests from the profile, not only in positions.

Surfaces

Where local visibility is created.

Local SEO works on five surfaces at once. They follow different rules, and only one of them is your website.

Google Maps and the local pack

The local pack sits above the organic results and shows three listings. For many queries with a location context it is the only surface people register at all.

  • Choose the primary category precisely and add secondary ones
  • Keep services, opening hours and attributes complete
  • Add photos regularly rather than once at setup
  • Actively answer the questions in your profile
Why does my listing only appear very close by?

Because distance weighs heavily in the local pack. Reach beyond the immediate area comes from prominence, reviews and local mentions, not from the profile alone.

Semtrix by Eskimoz

What the Eskimoz group means for your local SEO.

Semtrix is a global search agency: you get found where people search, in classic results and in AI answers. Semtrix has been part of the European Eskimoz group since 2024. That changes nothing about your day-to-day support, as your project stays with a fixed team in Düsseldorf or Essen.

For local SEO that is exactly the point. Support stays regional, with around 40 specialists in Germany and two offices in North Rhine-Westphalia. The tools come from the group, including the monitoring module that shows both the organic position and the AI Overview mention for every keyword. Companies running branches in several countries get the same system across every market.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about local SEO.

The questions that come up most often in a first conversation about local SEO.

What is the Google Business Profile?

The Google Business Profile, formerly Google My Business, is the listing through which a company appears in Google Maps and the local pack. A well-maintained profile is central to local visibility.

How important are reviews for local SEO?

Reviews are a significant trust and ranking signal locally. Volume, recency and the way reviews are handled all play a part, as does whether anyone replies at all.

Does local SEO work without a shop or office?

Yes. Service providers with a catchment area but no physical premises can still become locally visible, through service areas, local landing pages and the right profile settings.

What does NAP consistency mean?

NAP stands for name, address and phone number. For local SEO these three details have to be identical everywhere, down to the spelling. Contradictory entries in directories make attribution harder and cost visibility.

How long does local SEO take?

Profile work and data clean-up often show an effect within a few weeks. Local rankings in competitive cities take several months, because reviews and local authority need time to build.

Do I need a separate page for every location?

Yes, provided it carries its own content: contact person, directions, catchment area, local projects. Pages that differ only in the place name do more harm than good.

Can I rank in a city where I have no address?

In the local pack usually not, since the registered address counts there. In organic results it is possible, through a location page with a genuine connection to that catchment area.

What does local SEO cost?

The effort depends on the number of locations, the state of your listings and the competition in the region. A single site sits well below a chain with fifty profiles.

How do I measure the success of local SEO?

Through local rankings and profile views, but above all through calls, route requests and bookings from the profile. Those figures sit directly in the Google Business Profile statistics.

Does having several profiles for one business hurt?

Yes. Duplicates split reviews and signals and produce contradictory data. They are merged or removed before any other measure takes effect.

Does local SEO help with queries that name no location?

Yes. Google adds the local context to many queries automatically, based on where the searcher is. On mobile that is the normal case rather than the exception.

What is the difference between local SEO and GEO?

Local SEO aims at placements in Maps, the local pack and organic results. GEO aims at being named and recommended in AI answers as a provider in the area, and it has its own metrics.
