Bing Ads Optimization
Bing Ads optimization: using an underrated channel.
Google is not the only search engine worth advertising on. Microsoft Advertising, formerly Bing Ads, reaches audiences Google often misses, frequently at lower click costs and with a strong presence in B2B and on desktop. Bing Ads optimization by Semtrix steers your Microsoft Advertising campaigns on data and in the open, so you make full use of the channel.
Less competition
Where fewer advertisers bid, the same position often costs noticeably less.
Audiences of its own
Professional context and desktop use that Google alone cannot reproduce.
Not a straight copy
Importing from Google Ads is where Bing Ads optimization starts, not where it ends.
The basics
What is Bing Ads optimization?
Bing Ads optimization makes proper use of a channel many accounts just let run alongside. Semtrix sets up your Microsoft Advertising campaigns to exploit what is specific about this environment rather than mirroring Google.
Bing Ads optimization means the continuous improvement of campaigns in Microsoft Advertising, the advertising network behind the Bing search engine and partners such as Yahoo and AOL. The principles resemble Google Ads: keyword management, ad copy, bidding strategies, negative keywords and tracking. The environment, however, is different. There is less competition, click costs are often lower, and the audience is strongly represented in B2B, on desktop and among buyers with spending power. On top of that come features Google does not offer, above all targeting by company, industry and job function drawn from LinkedIn data.
Semtrix uses those particularities deliberately. The most common mistake in Microsoft accounts is an unchanged import from Google Ads: same bids, same exclusions, same expectations. The result is an account that never gets the chance to show its own strengths. Bing Ads optimization turns that around and treats Microsoft Advertising as a channel in its own right, with its own assessment.
Semtrix takes paid search personally: one named contact, full budget control and a strategy that fits your goals. As a Google Partner and part of the Eskimoz group, Semtrix combines local service with international experience. Bing Ads optimization is the ongoing management of campaigns in Microsoft Advertising. It uses lower competition, cheaper clicks and audience options built on LinkedIn data, rather than copying Google campaigns unchanged.
Key figures
Bing Ads optimization backed by evidence.
Microsoft and GEO
GEO: AI visibility as a discipline of its own.
Microsoft is closely tied to AI systems such as Copilot, which draws among other things on the Bing index. Organic AI visibility is a discipline of its own, GEO, considered separately from paid advertising and therefore separately from Bing Ads optimization.
For Bing Ads optimization that connection has a practical consequence: a site not indexed cleanly by Bing rarely appears in Copilot answers, while its ads keep running. Paid visibility does not replace organic indexing. You can read more on the pages for the GEO agency and GEO optimization, and specifically on Microsoft under Copilot SEO.
Microsoft Advertising
GEO / AI visibility

Most Microsoft accounts we take over are a copy of Google Ads running on half the budget. As soon as they get their own exclusions, their own bids and their own evaluation window, the arithmetic looks different.

Two channels, one team
Google and Microsoft sit with the same people. What we learn in one account reaches the other without a detour.
Its own assessment
Microsoft gets its own targets and its own evaluation windows, because volume is smaller and a single week says less.
No off-the-shelf account
What works in Google is reviewed, not adopted. Structure, exclusions and audiences are built for this environment.
Who it is for
Who is Bing Ads optimization right for?
Microsoft Advertising is particularly worthwhile for B2B companies, audiences with spending power and sectors with a high share of desktop use. Anyone struggling with high click costs on Google can often win additional reach more cheaply through Bing. It works best as a complement to existing Google Ads campaigns.
B2B and industry
In Bing Ads optimization this is the strongest case: work devices, decision makers at their desks and audiences that can be narrowed by company and job function through LinkedIn data.
Contested Google markets
When every click in the main channel has become expensive, the same search term is worth checking on Microsoft. The same sale often stays cheaper there.
Software and IT services
Markets with heavy Windows and Office use. The audience already sits inside the Microsoft ecosystem.
International campaigns
Bing's share varies widely by country. Before a rollout we check market by market whether a second channel pays.
Our approach
Import first, then separate.
Importing from Google Ads saves time and is the right way in. After that the real Bing Ads optimization begins: the account gets its own bids, its own exclusions and its own profit calculation. Because volume is smaller, decisions need longer periods. Judge a Microsoft account after two weeks and you are judging coincidence.
Building blocks
What Bing Ads optimization covers.
These building blocks of Bing Ads optimization interlock and are prioritised by impact and effort. Google Ads optimization is often worth running alongside, while the cross-channel view sits with ads optimization.
Campaign structure
A logical build, often based on an existing Google Ads setup, adapted to the Microsoft environment and to the smaller volume.
Keyword management
The right search terms, match types and negative keywords, with an exclusion list of its own rather than a copy.
Ad copy
Convincing ads with a clear promise, adapted to different character limits and extensions.
Audiences and LinkedIn targeting
Targeting by company, industry and job function from LinkedIn data, an option Google does not offer in this form.
Bid and budget management
Efficient spend focused on return on ad spend, with targets that match the smaller volume.
Tracking and testing
Clean measurement through Universal Event Tracking and structured optimization, aligned with the tracking on your other channels.

How it works
How we work together
Every Bing Ads optimization follows the same path, from the potential review to ongoing management. Reports and status calls keep it transparent what the second channel contributes.
Diagnosis
Analysis of existing campaigns and of the potential in Microsoft Advertising, including volume and competition per market.
Decision
A strategy with structure, keywords and a budget plan, including targets for the evaluation period.
Delivery
Building or optimizing the campaigns, including tracking through Universal Event Tracking.
Monitoring
Ongoing Bing Ads optimization and transparent reporting, with its own analysis for the Microsoft channel.
The levers
What Bing Ads optimization actually works on.
Microsoft Advertising differs from Google in details that decide the outcome. These five are the first things we check in any account.
The import is the beginning, not the goal
Microsoft offers an import of existing Google Ads campaigns. It saves days of setup and brings along everything that did not fit in the source account. After every import, Bing Ads optimization checks:
- Whether the import was one-off or scheduled and keeps overwriting changes
- Which bids were carried over and whether they suit the lower competition
- Whether campaigns are accidentally running in the Audience Network
- Which features were imported without an equivalent and stay empty
Existing campaigns can be used as a basis and imported. What makes sense afterwards is adapting them to the Microsoft environment rather than a straight one-to-one copy. Otherwise you give away the cost advantage that makes the channel interesting in the first place.
Should the import repeat automatically?Only while the account is not being optimized in its own right. A scheduled import otherwise overwrites exactly the adjustments Bing Ads optimization has made. Once its own bids and exclusions are in place, we switch it off.
Its own search terms, its own exclusions
The search terms arriving on Microsoft differ from those on Google. The channel therefore needs an exclusion list of its own:
- Review the search terms report separately, do not derive it from Google
- Check match types, because the same setting can behave differently
- Maintain exclusion lists at account level and extend them per campaign
- Deliberately test search terms that are too expensive on Google
Bing and the Microsoft Advertising network reach a relevant share of searchers, particularly on desktop and in professional settings, an audience Google alone does not fully cover. The share varies by country and sector, so we check it per market before a launch.
Do I need the same negative keywords as on Google? As a starting point yes, as a permanent solution no. The search terms report in Microsoft Advertising shows different patterns. An exclusion list simply mirrored from Google often blocks terms that would be profitable here.
The option Google does not have
Microsoft and LinkedIn belong to the same company. That creates an audience targeting option which can be decisive for B2B campaigns:
- Targeting by company, industry and job function
- Used as a bid adjustment rather than a hard restriction, to keep reach
- Combined with your own customer lists and website signals
- Reported separately, so the contribution of the targeting stays visible
It works from profile entries, not verified data. For narrowing down industries and functions that is usually enough, for addressing named companies it is not. We therefore mostly apply it as a bid adjustment.
Is it worth it for B2C?Rarely. The advantage lies in the professional context. In consumer business, customer lists, website signals and classic keyword targeting deliver more.
Product ads on Microsoft
Microsoft Advertising has product ads too. They run on a separate catalogue in Microsoft Merchant Center, which can be fed from the same source as Google Shopping:
- Reuse the feed, but check attributes against Microsoft's requirements
- Split campaigns by margin and bestsellers rather than by category
- Set separate bids, because competition on the same products is lower
- Check the catalogue regularly for rejected offers
Usually yes. The catalogue can be filled from the same source. Mandatory fields and categories have to be checked, though, because Microsoft differs in places and offers are otherwise rejected quietly.
Are product ads on Microsoft worthwhile?Often yes, particularly in ranges with a high desktop share and strong competition on Google. Because volume is smaller, the assessment needs longer periods than on Google Shopping.
Setting up Universal Event Tracking properly
Microsoft measures conversions through Universal Event Tracking, or UET. It is a tag of its own, not an add-on to your Google measurement. In Bing Ads optimization it comes first:
- Deploy the UET tag through the tag manager and cover it in the consent setup
- Define conversion goals independently instead of mirroring the Google ones
- Store conversion values, so value-based bidding becomes possible at all
- Build audience lists from UET for remarketing
No. Microsoft Advertising needs its own tag. Without UET, campaigns run without conversion data, automated bidding strategies cannot be used sensibly and any assessment of the channel stays guesswork.
Why does Microsoft report fewer conversions than expected?Usually because the tag was added late, because values are missing, or because a consent setup blocks the UET tag. Before declaring a channel unprofitable, we check those three points first.

Semtrix by Eskimoz
What the Eskimoz group means for your Bing Ads optimization.
Semtrix is a global search agency: you get found wherever people search, in paid search, in organic search and in AI answers. Semtrix has been part of the European Eskimoz group since 2024. That changes nothing about your Bing Ads optimization: your account stays with a fixed team in Düsseldorf or Essen.
In Bing Ads optimization the group's setup pays off above all internationally. Microsoft's share of search varies widely by country, and with offices in 5 European countries and projects in 10 languages we can decide market by market whether a second channel pays. At the European Search Awards 2026 the group was named Best Large Integrated Search Agency.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Bing Ads optimization.
The questions we are asked most often about Bing Ads optimization in a first conversation.
Is Microsoft Advertising worth it at all?
Yes, particularly in B2B and desktop settings and among audiences with spending power. Because competition is lower, click costs are often below Google's.
Can I carry over my Google Ads campaigns?
Existing campaigns can be used as a basis and imported. What makes sense afterwards is adapting them to the Microsoft environment rather than a straight one-to-one copy.
How large is Bing's reach?
Bing and the Microsoft Advertising network reach a relevant share of searchers, particularly on desktop and in professional settings, an audience Google alone does not fully cover.
Is it still called Bing Ads?
Officially no. The platform has been called Microsoft Advertising since 2019. The term Bing Ads optimization has stuck in everyday use because many people still search for it. Both refer to the same advertising network.
How much budget does the channel need?
Enough to produce reliable numbers within one evaluation period. Because volume is smaller than on Google, a two-week test budget rarely suffices. We normally plan for at least a quarter.
What does Bing Ads optimization cost?
Management depends on account size, the number of campaigns and your goals. Media spend goes directly to Microsoft. After the free potential review you receive a transparent proposal rather than a flat rate.
Is there Smart Bidding on Microsoft too?
Yes, with comparable strategies such as target CPA and target ROAS. They need the same precondition: enough conversions through Universal Event Tracking. At low volume, Bing Ads optimization deliberately starts simpler and switches later.
What is the Microsoft Audience Network?
A network of placements outside the search results, for example on MSN and in partner environments. It can be useful, but it often runs unnoticed and blurs the numbers of your search campaigns. We therefore separate it deliberately.
Can I reach Copilot through Bing?
Microsoft has begun introducing ad placements in AI interfaces. Separate from that is the organic mention in Copilot answers, which belongs to GEO work and is described on the page about Copilot SEO.
How does the ad copy differ from Google?
Barely in principle, noticeably in detail. Character limits, available extensions and policies differ. An unchanged import therefore regularly leads to truncated text and unused formats.
Who owns the ad account?
You do. Bing Ads optimization happens inside your account, with access granted to us, rather than through an agency account placed in between. History, data and campaigns stay with you.
How long until Bing Ads optimization takes effect?
First clicks arrive on launch day. A reliable assessment takes considerably longer than on Google, because fewer search queries accumulate. Exclusions and ad copy show an effect within weeks, but for a statement on cost per conversion we plan for a quarter.
Does Bing Ads optimization run alongside Google Ads?
As a rule yes. Both channels serve the same demand in different environments. How budget is split between them is decided by ads optimization on the basis of marginal return per channel.
