Brand sentiment

Brand sentiment: how AI systems talk about your brand.

In AI search it is not enough to be mentioned. What matters is how people talk about your brand. Does ChatGPT recommend you, name you neutrally or even advise against you? That is what brand sentiment captures: the tone in which AI systems portray your brand. In a world where people make buying decisions on the basis of generated answers, that perception becomes a hard business factor.

Tone rather than frequency

Brand sentiment measures not how often you are named but in what tone.

With a recommendation level

Brand sentiment separates a passing mention from an active recommendation, and that makes all the difference in sales.

With root-cause analysis

Every brand sentiment finding comes with the sources behind it. Otherwise nothing can be corrected.

Fundamentals

What is brand sentiment in AI answers?

Brand sentiment is a building block of GEO as a discipline in its own right, meaning GEO optimization. It answers the question that follows visibility: does the mention help you or hurt you?

Brand sentiment describes the mood or tone in which a brand is portrayed in text, and in a GEO context specifically in the answers of AI systems and in the sources those answers are built from. It is usually classified as positive, neutral or negative, often with an added recommendation level: is the brand actively recommended, merely listed as an option or mentioned in passing? While pure mention tracking counts whether a brand appears, sentiment analysis assesses how it is positioned. The same mention can read as a clear recommendation or as a warning, and for business results that difference matters more than any frequency.

This is relevant because AI systems derive their judgement from many web sources. If negative or outdated portrayals dominate, that can harden in the answers, with a direct effect on trust and conversions. An old test report, a superseded price or an unresolved complaint thread carry further than the original occasion warrants.

Semtrix makes brand sentiment measurable through its own GEO and LLM tracking tool and develops measures to influence it positively. Start with a free analysis and find out how AI systems portray your brand today.

In short

Brand sentiment assesses the tone in which a brand is portrayed in AI answers and in the underlying sources: positive, neutral or negative, plus the recommendation level. What is measured is not whether a brand is named, but how.

GEO and SEO

GEO and SEO: two disciplines that complement each other.

The tone in which a brand is discussed also affects classic search engine optimization: positive, credible mentions strengthen reputation and trust, which feed into classic evaluation signals as well. GEO and SEO remain independent, but they work together on reputation.

The difference lies in how visible the judgement is. In classic search people form their own picture from ten results and several review portals. An AI answer takes that work away and already supplies a judgement. Where there used to be a list, there is now a sentence, and that sentence often decides whether you make the shortlist. Brand sentiment therefore moves reputation work from the results page into the sources the answer is built from.

We had a case where a provider appeared in every second answer and still barely received enquiries. The reason was in the answer itself: he was named as the cheap alternative, never as the recommendation. You do not change that with more mentions, but with different ones.

Why Semtrix

Why run brand sentiment analysis with Semtrix?

Semtrix built GEO expertise early and runs its own GEO and LLM tracking tool, which also evaluates the tone of mentions. As part of the Eskimoz group, named Best Large Integrated Search Agency at the European Search Awards 2026, Semtrix combines technical monitoring with strategic reputation work. The jury explicitly cited the group's early GEO focus.

Sentiment work is only worth something if a finding leads to an action. At Semtrix the analysis therefore does not stop at a traffic light but ends with the sources that shape the judgement and a prioritised plan of which to tackle first. You can read more about the team about us, and see examples of our work in the references. Strategy and ownership sit with the GEO agency, the broader reputation work with online reputation management.

Who it is for

Who is brand sentiment analysis right for?

It pays off for brands whose perception is business-critical, for instance in advice-heavy, highly competitive or trust-sensitive markets. It is particularly worthwhile when a brand does appear in AI answers but is portrayed unfavourably, out of date or inconsistently.

Visible brands with weak conversion

A brand that is named often and still receives few enquiries rarely has a visibility problem; it has a brand sentiment problem. Usually the recommendation level is missing, and that sits in how the answer is worded.

Trust-sensitive industries

In finance, healthcare, law and consulting a critical portrayal weighs more heavily than elsewhere. Ongoing observation of brand sentiment is especially worthwhile here.

Brands after an incident

Coverage lingers longer in models than in the press. The brand sentiment analysis shows whether and where an old incident still shapes the portrayal.

Brands with outdated information

Old prices, discontinued products, a former managing director. When sources are out of date, AI repeats them anyway. The correction starts with the sources, not with the answer.

3 levels
Presence answers: is the brand named? Mentions answer: are there enough sources that know it? Sentiment answers: what do those sources say about it? The third question decides the value of the first two.

Where the lines are drawn

More than visibility: the right perception.

Visibility in AI systems is one half, the right perception the other. AI mentions tracking measures presence and answers whether your brand appears in the answer. Building brand mentions creates the references across the open web that models derive their picture from. Work on brand sentiment makes sure those mentions help your brand rather than harm it. Only together do they give a complete picture of AI reputation. This page covers only the tone.

Building blocks

How Semtrix analyses and steers brand sentiment.

Brand sentiment is part of the wider GEO optimization, while strategy and ownership sit with the GEO agency.

01

Sentiment analysis

Systematic capture of the tone in which AI systems name your brand, including the recommendation level and a confidence value.

02

Context evaluation

In which topics and questions your brand appears positive, neutral or negative. The picture is rarely the same across all topics.

03

Root-cause analysis

Which web sources shape the perception. The basis for targeted correction, because an answer cannot be edited but a source can.

04

Competitor comparison

How your brand is portrayed relative to the providers named in the same answers.

05

Reputation measures

Building positive, consistent signals, connected to brand mentions and offpage optimization.

06

Monitoring and early warning

Ongoing observation through AI mentions tracking, to catch negative swings early.

Process

How we work together.

Brand sentiment in four steps, from the first measurement to ongoing observation. Every measure starts at a concrete source, not at the answer itself.

01

Diagnosis

Brand sentiment measurement across a fixed question set, separated by system and by topic, including a competitor comparison.

02

Decision

Prioritising the sources that shape the judgement most strongly, and deciding which to correct, supplement or outweigh.

03

Delivery

Correcting outdated information, building positive mentions and replying to criticism where it stands in public.

04

Monitoring

Ongoing observation with early warning on negative swings, so a single incident does not settle into model knowledge.

Assessment

How brand sentiment is assessed.

Four brand sentiment categories that stay separate in the evaluation. Only that separation turns a mood into a metric you can work with.

Positive portrayal

The brand is named with strengths, evidence or clear use cases. That is the target state, but it does not happen by itself:

  • Positive mentions come from evidence, not from marketing language
  • Concrete use cases work better than general praise
  • Current sources carry more weight than old success stories
  • A positive picture in one topic does not transfer automatically to others
Can positive sentiment be produced deliberately?

Not produced, but built. Positive brand sentiment grows out of what credible sources say. Placing demonstrable strengths there shifts the picture over time. Promising a guaranteed result would be dishonest.

How long does positive sentiment last?

As long as the sources stay current. Brand sentiment is a trend, not a state. An article from 2023 praising a discontinued product eventually works against you, which is why updating is part of the ongoing work.

Semtrix by Eskimoz

What the Eskimoz group means for your AI reputation.

Semtrix is a global search agency: you are found where people search, in classic search and in AI answers alike. Since 2024 Semtrix has been part of the European Eskimoz group. Nothing changes about your support; your project stays with a fixed team in Düsseldorf or Essen.

From the group comes the LLM Ranking in the Eskimoz app, which tracks mentions and their context systematically. Because the group works across 5 countries and 10 languages, tone can be assessed market by market, which matters because AI systems answer from different sources in each language area. At the European Search Awards 2026 the group was named Best Large Integrated Search Agency, and the jury explicitly cited its early GEO focus.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about brand sentiment.

The questions we are asked most often about brand sentiment in a first conversation.

How is brand sentiment measured?

Brand sentiment is measured by classifying the tone of brand mentions in AI answers, usually as positive, neutral or negative, often with a confidence and recommendation value. That produces a reliable picture of AI perception.

Can I influence how an AI talks about my brand?

You cannot control it directly, but you can influence it deliberately, through consistent positive signals across the web, correct information and the build-up of high-quality mentions in the right contexts.

What should I do about negative AI sentiment?

First identify the sources that shape it, then correct information, build positive mentions and monitor developments continuously. A fast response to negative swings matters.

How does brand sentiment differ from AI mentions tracking?

AI mentions tracking measures whether your brand appears in the AI answer. Brand sentiment assesses how it is portrayed there. One metric is a frequency, the other an assessment.

And how does it differ from brand mentions?

Brand mentions are the references across the open web that get built. Brand sentiment assesses the tone of those references and what becomes of them in AI answers.

How often should sentiment be measured?

Brand sentiment is measured at least monthly, and in trust-sensitive markets or after an incident more often, because there early detection matters more than the annual trend.

How long does it take to turn a negative picture around?

Usually several months. Models do not re-evaluate immediately, and a single new source shifts little. It goes faster only when a clearly identifiable piece of false information can be corrected.

Does sentiment outside AI answers count as well?

Yes, as a cause. The answer is built from sources, so both are recorded: the tone in the web sources and the tone in the generated answer.

Is brand sentiment the same as reputation management?

It is the GEO part of it. The broader work on reviews, crisis communication and search results sits with online reputation management. Brand sentiment focuses on AI answers and their sources.

What if the AI simply states something false about us?

Then we first check which source the statement comes from. As a rule there is one, and it can be corrected or outweighed. The answer itself cannot be edited; the source usually can.

Will sentiment differ between systems?

Often yes, because the systems draw on different sources. Brand sentiment is therefore never a single number. Evaluation therefore runs per system rather than producing an average that blurs both pictures.

What does a brand sentiment analysis cost?

The effort depends on the number of questions, systems and markets. After the free analysis you receive a transparent proposal rather than a flat rate.
