Amazon optimization

Amazon optimization for more visibility on the largest product marketplace.

For many buying decisions Amazon is the first place people look, often before classic search. If you are not on the first results page there, you lose revenue to competitors. Amazon optimization makes sure your product pages get found and that this visibility turns into sales.

Amazon has its own rules

Amazon optimization follows Amazon's ranking logic, not Google's. What sells, ranks.

Thought through to the Buy Box

Amazon optimization does not stop at the listing. It ends with the offer that wins the buy button.

Aligned with your range

Amazon optimization starts where your margin sits, not on every ASIN at once.

Fundamentals

What is Amazon optimization?

Amazon optimization, often called Amazon SEO, is marketplace SEO: the work on findability and selling power of your product pages inside Amazon.

Amazon optimization covers every measure that makes product pages on Amazon more visible and better at selling. Amazon runs its own search algorithm, known as A9 and in its later form as A10, which sorts offers by relevance and by sales performance. The work therefore covers titles, bullet points, descriptions, backend keywords, images and A+ content, along with the factors behind the listing: price, stock level, fulfilment method, reviews and return rate. The aim of Amazon optimization is to appear high up for relevant search terms and to build the product page so that visibility becomes purchases. The difference to web search lies in the currency: Amazon measures revenue per query, not clicks.

That leads straight to the defining trait of Amazon optimization: relevance and performance depend on each other. An Amazon listing ranks because it sells, and it sells because it ranks. Work on keywords alone, while ignoring the conversion of the listing, turns only half the screw. So in every project Semtrix looks at both sides: which search terms an offer reaches on Amazon today, and what stands between a page view and a purchase.

Semtrix takes Amazon optimization personally: a named contact, a data-led approach and a set of priorities that fits your range. As part of the Eskimoz group, Semtrix combines marketplace know-how with experience from organic search and paid media. In short

Amazon optimization improves product pages for Amazon's search algorithm and for the buying decision. It works on titles, bullet points, backend keywords, images and A+ content, and at the same time on price, reviews, availability and the Buy Box. It is measured in revenue per search term, not in rankings alone.

Amazon and GEO

GEO: AI visibility as a discipline of its own.

Product research is moving too: people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini for recommendations and comparisons before they open a marketplace. GEO, the separate discipline of AI visibility, is therefore relevant for retailers as well, and it is not a sub-item of Amazon optimization. Both work on the same buying decision, but at different points and with different metrics.

On top of that, Amazon uses AI itself. The shopping assistant Rufus answers questions directly in the app and draws on product data, bullet points, A+ content and reviews to do so. For Amazon optimization that means listings have to answer questions, not just match keywords. Dimensions, materials, compatibility and use case belong in the listing as written text, not only in the image gallery. Channel work outside Amazon sits with the GEO agency and GEO optimization.

The most common question in a first conversation about Amazon optimization is which keywords belong in the listing. The more useful question is why someone was on the product page and still did not buy. The answer sits in the reviews and in the return reasons, not in a keyword tool.

Why Semtrix

Why Amazon optimization from Semtrix?

Semtrix has been on the market since 2015 and has delivered more than 1,500 projects in 11 years, many of them for retailers and shops. How long optimization keeps working in retail is visible at led-martin.de: since 2018 we have raised visibility by 250 % and visitor numbers by 40 %, with 226 keywords in the top 3. That project runs in the client's own shop rather than on the marketplace, but the mechanism is the same: depth of range, clean product data and patience beat the quick fix.

As part of the Eskimoz group, named Best Large Integrated Search Agency at the European Search Awards 2026, Semtrix connects Amazon optimization with the other channels. That is not for its own sake: using the same product data and the same search terms on Amazon and in SEO optimization saves work and avoids running two contradictory versions of your range. The people behind the work are on about us, comparable projects sit in references. For long-term support across all search channels there is the SEO agency.

Who it is for

Who is Amazon optimization right for?

Manufacturers with their own brand

With Amazon Brand Registry you get access to A+ content, a Store and extended brand analytics. Amazon optimization uses exactly those tools, which stay closed to resellers without their own brand.

Retailers with a wide range

With several hundred Amazon ASINs the question is not how one listing becomes perfect, but which twenty come first. Amazon optimization prioritises by contribution margin and search volume rather than alphabetically.

Products with visibility but no sales

Impressions are there, conversion sits below the Amazon category average. The bottleneck is then in the listing, the price or the reviews, and Amazon optimization starts there rather than with new keywords.

New products without history

Without sales history the Amazon algorithm is missing its most important signal. Amazon optimization here means a clean listing at launch, reviews built through permitted routes and a start-up phase supported by ads.

20 ASINs
In most Amazon accounts twenty products carry the bulk of the contribution margin. Those twenty are optimised in full first, and the rest follows in waves using whatever has proved to work.

Our approach

Amazon optimization at the revenue lever.

An Amazon account does not lose revenue evenly across all products, it loses it in a few places. So before any measure, Semtrix works out where the biggest lever sits in your range: with products that get impressions but no clicks, with products that get clicks but no purchase, or with products that never appear in the Amazon Buy Box at all. Only then is it decided whether title, images, price or reviews come first. Amazon optimization applied evenly to everything costs time and moves nothing.

Building blocks

What Amazon optimization covers.

Six areas make up a project in Amazon optimization. Which area carries weight comes out of the diagnosis, not out of the offer. Amazon optimization extends your visibility beyond search engines. For classic search see SEO optimization, for paid reach SEA optimization.

01

Amazon keyword research

Relevant search terms for title, bullet points and backend, taken from Amazon's own data sources rather than Google volumes. What people type on a marketplace differs from what they ask a search engine.

02

Product page optimization

The core of Amazon optimization: titles, bullet points and descriptions built to rank and to sell. Benefit before feature, dimensions and compatibility early, and no keyword repetition, which does nothing on Amazon anyway.

03

Content and images

Image set, video and A+ content as a selling space of their own on the Amazon product page. Main image cut out, application shots with context, a size comparison, and a comparison module that points into your own range instead of a competitor's.

04

Ranking optimization

Targeted work for better placements in Amazon search: category and browse nodes, attributes and variations, stock level and price position, coordinated with the campaigns from SEA optimization.

05

Reviews and Buy Box

Building Amazon reviews through permitted routes, reading negative reviews as product feedback rather than only replying to them, and maintaining the factors that decide the Buy Box: price, fulfilment method, availability and seller performance.

06

Monitoring

Ongoing tracking of Amazon rankings, visibility and sales performance per ASIN, with a clear link between change and effect. Without this block, Amazon optimization stays an assertion.

Process

How does working together look?

Amazon optimization in four steps, from the first look into the Amazon account to ongoing support.

01

Diagnosis

Analysis of product pages, keywords and competitors, plus the figures from your Seller or Vendor account: impressions, click rate, conversion per ASIN and share of the Buy Box.

02

Decision

A plan for Amazon optimization with clear priorities. Which ASIN first, which building block first, and which measure only makes sense alongside a pricing or range decision.

03

Implementation

Optimising titles, content, keywords and images, plus backend fields, attributes and A+ modules. Changes run in traceable waves so that effects can be attributed.

04

Monitoring

Ongoing tracking of Amazon rankings and sales performance. What worked is rolled out to the rest of the range, what did not is rolled back.

Listing

The building blocks of an Amazon listing.

Five elements of an Amazon listing decide visibility and purchase. Each has its own rules, its own limits and its own typical mistakes. Amazon optimization works on all five, but never on all five at once.

The title carries relevance and click rate

The title is the most heavily weighted text field of an Amazon listing and also the first thing cut off on a phone. In Amazon optimization it is therefore built front to back, not from important to less important.

  • Brand, product type and the key differentiator in the first characters
  • Size, quantity, colour and variant where they belong to the buying decision
  • Respect Amazon's title length rules, which differ noticeably by category
  • No special characters, no promotional claims, no repetition of the same terms
How long can an Amazon title be?

Amazon sets the length per category, and the upper limit for an Amazon title is often 200 characters, in some categories considerably less. What matters is the mobile view: depending on the device only the first 80 characters or so are visible. Anything meant to trigger the click belongs before that.

Is there any value in repeating a keyword in the title?

No. Amazon search indexes a search term once, a second mention adds no ranking benefit and costs readability. This is one of the clearest differences to classic search engine optimisation.

Semtrix by Eskimoz

What the Eskimoz group means for your Amazon optimization.

Semtrix is a global search agency: you get found where people search, in classic search, on the marketplace and in AI answers. Semtrix has been part of the European Eskimoz group since 2024. Nothing changes about how you are looked after, your project stays with a fixed team in Düsseldorf or Essen.

For Amazon optimization what counts most is the view beyond the marketplace. The group provides data and tools for comparing demand, competition and price levels across several markets before a range moves into a new country. The group was named Best Large Integrated Search Agency at the European Search Awards 2026.

FAQ

Common questions about Amazon optimization.

The questions about Amazon optimization that come up most often in a first conversation.

How does Amazon SEO differ from Google SEO?

Amazon runs its own search algorithm, strongly geared to sales performance and product data. Google assesses websites on content, technology and links among other things. The principles are similar, the execution differs clearly: on Amazon there are no backlinks, no domain authority and no benefit in repeating keywords, while the conversion of the listing drives visibility.

Which elements matter most on an Amazon product page?

Title, bullet points, description, backend keywords and images. Together they decide visibility and conversion. On top of those come the factors behind the listing: price, availability, fulfilment method and reviews.

Does Amazon optimization produce quick results?

First effects can show relatively quickly, because Amazon weights sales performance heavily and an improved listing can trigger more purchases straight away. Lasting results come from continuous work over several months.

What are the A9 and A10 algorithms?

Those are the names given to the ranking systems behind Amazon search. They assess how well an offer matches a query and how likely it is to sell. A10 refers to the later development, in which external signals and user behaviour carry more weight. Amazon does not publish the weighting, but the way it works can be read from account data.

How do I find the right keywords for Amazon?

From Amazon's own sources: search term reports from the Amazon account, autocomplete, competitor listings and the reports from running Amazon Ads campaigns. Google volumes are a useful addition but only partly reflect buying behaviour on a marketplace.

Does Amazon optimization require Amazon Ads?

Not necessarily, but the two work together. Amazon Ads creates the first sales that make a new listing visible to the algorithm, and the search term reports from those campaigns provide the data for organic Amazon optimization.

What does Amazon optimization cost?

The effort depends on the number of ASINs, the state of the product data, the category and the competition. After the free analysis you get a prioritised list with the effort per measure instead of a flat price.

What is the Buy Box and why does it matter so much?

The Buy Box is the field with the buy button on the Amazon product page. Where several sellers offer the same product, only one gets it, and by far the largest share of sales runs through it. Price, fulfilment method, availability and seller performance decide who wins it.

How should I handle product variations?

Variations are grouped on Amazon in a parent-child structure so that reviews and sales history stay together. Only group what customers understand as the same product in a different version. Different products in one variation family are a guideline breach.

What do I do if someone changes my listing?

With Amazon Brand Registry you secure control over the title, images and description of your brand in the Amazon listing and can report changes made by others. Without brand protection your control over the listing is limited, which is why registration comes at the start of any Amazon optimization for manufacturers.

Does Amazon optimization also help visibility in Google?

Partly. Amazon product pages often rank in organic Google search as well, and a clean listing helps there. It does not replace your own website: that belongs to you, the listing does not. For the visibility of your own domain see SEO optimization.

Are Amazon listings used in AI answers?

Yes, both through the Rufus shopping assistant inside Amazon and through external AI systems that draw on product pages as a source. Both work with written-out product details. Visibility outside the marketplace is covered by GEO optimization.
